Photographer Spotlight Michelle White

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you?

I had an interest in photography from a fairly young age (before digital cameras) and was fortunate enough to take a class when I was about 10  (circa 1982). I still remember the smell of developing chemicals. Anyhow, flash forward to when I started my blog, in 2008. I admired other bloggers’ photos and really took an interest in honing my own photography skills.

How did you get your current position?

Well, I am a Mom-blogger, so I thank my husband for the first part (making me a Mom), and the blogging I jumped in and did that myself (with my husband’s support).

I suppose the answer, then, would be my husband:)

How did your training or schooling prepare you for your job?

I went to college for fine arts where I took classes in drawing, sculpting. jewelery making, and 2-D design. I also spent a great amount of time in the theater department where I gained experience both on stage and behind the scenes. I was trained to build and paint sets, do makeup, and even did sound and lighting.  I think any exposure to the visual arts helps to shape the way you look at the world. Exploring different aspects of art broadens your view of all the Arts.

What was the greatest obstacle you had to overcome in pursuing your career?

Time management is always a challenge when you have a family. The delicate balance between taking care of your family and finding the passion in yourself is always tricky. Sometimes, though, if you are lucky (like me) you can combine the two quite a bit.

Who would you name as the most influential person in shaping your career? Why?

I have always looked to others in similar positions as myself for inspiration. Amanda Soule of www.soulemama.com is one of the first bloggers I read/saw that truly sparked a photography fire in me. There is something so honest and beautiful about her photos which keeps me coming back.

If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?

Knowing that I have inspired someone else is up there on my list!
