Photographer Spotlight: Meggan Harper

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you?

As my babies grew into children, I found myself photographing them more and more. I found myself obsessed with learning all I could about photography. I always offered to photograph my friends children as well. That is how you find your passion. If you’d do it even if it was for free.

How did you get your current position?

I attended Daytona State College’s photography program, and opened my business immediately afterward.

How did your training or schooling prepare you for your job?

My college studies prepared me for the technical aspects of being a photographer, and I learned most of my business skills from seminars and workshops taught through PPA and FPP.

What was the greatest obstacle you had to overcome in pursuing your career?

The greatest obstacle was learning how to Value my time, skill, and expertise enough to charge accordingly.

Who would you name as the most influential person in shaping your career?  Why?

The most influential person is my mentor, Jeff Shaw. He has coached me in my business, but also personally. He is very level-headed and logical, and a great teacher and friend.

If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?

Without question, it would be a house in the mountains, with pet chickens. That is my happy place.
