I honestly can’t tie it to a specific date or event. I was a software developer before I went to work teaching people Photoshop and photography. I had the usual 9-5 job at a desk where I sat the entire day working on code, etc… At some point, a few years after I made the move in to the creative industry and teaching, I looked back and thought “What if I had to…

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you? I can remember when as if it were yesterday. It was May 21, 1980. I just saw the “Empire Strikes Back”. I was blown away. I said I want to do that for a living. I want to make a living with a camera. In fact, it’s in my high school yearbook under my picture. “Will make a living with a camera.” About a week later my grandfather gave me his old Bell and Howell 8mm movie camera. I was hooked. Then in August of that year my parents gave me a Canon AV-1. My first still camera. How did you get your current position? I worked my ass off. I started out doing freelance…

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you? I still don’t know that the photography and video industry is for me… it’s a dialect, maybe even a language, but it isn’t the message itself. I find that certain parts of what I have to say are translated better visually, others verbally through writing, or speaking, photography and video really satisfy my tribe and communal needs, of creating collaborative art with other artists towards a common vision. Its a dance between myself, hair and makeup, the models, the viewer, and I love the intimacy of that… but something I can say better through painting, through sculpture, through my books. A lot of the time I need…

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you?I felt hints of it while I was in middle school. That’s when I built a 110 camera out of a kit, similar to how kids build model cars from a box of plastic parts. I remember taking a photo in Washington D.C. that looked exactly like a postcard. Photography was a serious hobby through high school and college, (both 35mm and 4×5 view cameras) but then I got distracted by graphic design for a decade or so. It’s once photography went digital that my passion for computers and photography could be merged into a profession. How did you get your current position? Back in…

When did you know the photography/video industry was for you? I attended Art college and was a Printmaking major and did a lot of painting and drawing. When I graduated from college I started working as an artist’s assistant & gallery installation assistant.I realized very quickly that a career in the fine arts is not as romantic as it sounds. Too much time spent on trying to get shows & obtaining grants spurred my interest in taking computer graphics classes at the School of Visual Arts in NYC in the early ‘90s. I immediately fell in love with Photoshop and have given my soul to it ever since. How did you get…
